The short story, “The yellow wallpaper, depicting the life of a woman suffering from hysteria, will be first summarized, and the importance of setting, imagery and symbolism and theme in the story will be discussed. In the story, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, a woman called Jane suffers from a neurological disorder after giving birth is forced to live inside a secluded old mansion in almost complete isolation for several months, as a way that some people thought could help her recover from this depressing disorder. Inside this mansion Jane is not allowed to do anything much more than rest, and occasionally talk to her husband John and Jennie, who is his sister. Both, however, do not provide a great deal of comfort and understanding towards her condition. John, because he is a physician tends to relate to only the physical reasons for feeling sick, without realizing that the source of Jane's sickness is probably a more psychological that a physical one.
