The Uncivilized Cultures in Short Stories

Being uncivilized is defined as the lacking of cultural refinement with the use of mercilessly harsh or cruel behaviors (1). Every society has had their own merciless punishments or series of superstitions. These traditions are used as a form of ritual or the answer to questions they otherwise can’t explain. Some people have an inability to deal with things they can’t explain or want to deny. A couple wanted to deny the fact that there was a potential the “angel” was coming to take their child. The towns people in “The Lottery” were trying to prevent an unsuccessful year of harvest. The connection between theses two stories is the unmistakable uncivilized way each society treats members of the human race. Motivated either by the unknown, unexplainable, or the mere existence of tradition.
