The truths behind the lies

Lakoff believes that we live by conceptual metaphors. Everything we do, say and think is in some sense metaphorical. If we were to say “I am feeling up today,” Lakoff argues that that sentence is fundamentally a metaphor. No one is actually “up” but rather metaphorically speaking they are “up”, or happy, or in a good mood, etc. A creative metaphor on the other hand is what we normally read in a book, “The dress was a river”, “the hair was a monster,” etc. A creative metaphor is not often used in everyday speech while a conceptual metaphor is.
