The Trial

The story of The Trial is of a tragedy of the futile efforts of a man who tries to convince an uncompromising court system of his innocence. Der Prozess, which is the title of the novel in German, not only indicates that it is a trial of the court system, but a never-ending process as well. The Trial can be viewed as a satire of the Austro-Hungarian bureaucracy system in the early 1900’s. Joesph K. is the hero and protagonist of the novel who is unjustly accused of a crime he has no knowledge of. Until this tragic event, Joseph was a man who had taken law, order, and justice for granted. The Courts basic principals states that the law is devine and unquestionable. Unfortunately, in such a court system, the actual guilt or innocence of the defendant is a trivial aspect in the case and every defendant is worthy of execution.
