Tanks were first developed by the British for use in the first World War. The appearance of the new weapon on the battlefield caught the Germans by surprise. They were originally designed as a mobile pillbox that could advance forward under machine gun fire to crush wire and obstacles and to provide fire support for advancing ground troops. Not only did the tank affect the outcome of WWI, but it changed the way that battle was to take place forever.
