The Suleman Usman bakery Fiasco
Suleman Usman Bakery is a landmark of the city of Mumbai. Established around 80 years ago by Suleman, a reputed baker on Muhammad Ali road adjacent to Victoria terminus the bakery is known for its excellent cuisine and high quality standards. Since the death of Suleman his sons Suleman and Usman have run the bakery. Smack in the middle of a Muslim locale this bakery has more or less become a symbol of the high Muslim presence in the city.
In an unfortunate incident during the 1993 Bombay riots 9 workers of the bakery were brutally massacred by the city police due to a misunderstanding. This incident led to an increase in communal tension, which then spiraled out of control.
