The Struggle to be Equal

The true scope of racial relations in the United States has changed little in the past 35 years. The civil rights movement helped to expose discrimination as an overt act of hate. One could argue, however, that this hate was only driven underground. Alan Barker’s film, Mississippi Burning, helped to illustrate the plight of the pioneers of the civil rights movement. This film illustrates not only what it was like being black in Mississippi in the 60’s, but also what it was like to be white and fighting for blacks during this time. Fighting for standard civil rights was a mistake as this film clearly shows. Mississippi Burning is a concise example of racial inequality as it was in 1964 in the southern United States. It is based upon a true story and is actually very disturbing to watch.
