The essay that I selected to summarize and apply concepts of rhetorical theory to is a document called “The Slave Years” that covers the life of Frederick Douglass. Born in February 1818 on Holmes Hill Farm near the town of Easton on Maryland’s Eastern shore, Douglass awaited his lifetime journey as a slave.
This particular essay, “The Slave Years”, follows Frederick Douglass throughout his life as he is tossed back and forth between various slave owners. The essay begins in Frederick’s younger years. Growing up, Douglass was watched over by his grandmother, Betsey Baily, because his mother was required to work long hours in the cornfields and was unable to care for her children. At the age of six, his grandmother told him that they were taking a long “journey”, and she left him at the Lloyd Plantation with a few of his older siblings,...
