Penance
Penance is a sacrament in which forgiveness of sins is absolved from the person by the priest. It is an outward sign instituted by christ to impart grace to the soul. It is basically a penitent prayer that makes the person accuse himself of his sins and therefore it is taken by god. It is another name for confession and this is because your sins are confessed in the time of need to let you be clean when you enter heaven.
The grace from God is deliverance from sin and, in the case of mortal sin, from its eternal punishment. Mitch needed penance when he came back from his rather successful but meaningless life to visit Morrie once again.
He really needed someone to help ease the pain he had because he felt that his petty desires in life were consuming him. Therefore he went to the only person he knew could help him with that and had done so in the past.
