The Scarlett Letter

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is about a woman named Hester Prynne; who commits the crime of adultery and is forced to wear the Scarlet Letter as a reminder of her sin. When her husband, Roger Chillingsworth comes to town and discovers what happened, he is driven by revenge to find the father of the baby. He finds out that the father is the towns reverend, and begins to torture him to make Dimmesdale admit it. While this is taking place Hester continues with the responsibility of wearing the Scarlet Letter. This book basically reflects upon the theme of responsibility. Two people’s lives would be destroyed if they don’t follow their responsibility. This concludes to say that, We Must Take Responsibility for Our Actions or Suffer the Consequences.

Hester is the only character in the book who fully accepts her responsibility. First, while she walks down the street she has no fear of what people might say about her.
