The Scarlett Letter

The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, tells the story of a woman, Hester Prynne and the events that happen to her after she has had a child out of wedlock with the town minister, Arthur Dimmesdale; because of this crime Hester is forced by her Puritan community to wear a letter "A" sewed on to her clothes. Hester and Dimmesdale's daughter is called Pearl. She is very advanced for any young child, and the scarlet letter that her mother must wear confuses her very much. Pearl is not only one of the main characters, but she is also the main symbol in the book. Pearl can be seen as a symbol for Hester's inner self. In the book Pearl expresses the things that Hester is not able to express herself. Pearl is very wild, which is showing that Hester has that in her, but cannot let it out due to society. When Dimmesdale kisses Pearl, she pulls away, much like Hester has to do when she wants to show her emotion for Dimmesdale because she loves him so much. Pearl, after Dimmesdale kisses her...
