The relationship between Hagar Shipley and Stevens.

“In a word, tragedy is the most accurately balanced portrayal of the human being in his struggle for happiness.” Both Hagar and Stevens are tragic characters who let their pride prevent them from attaining their true goal. Both characters would have achieved the things they strived for their entire lives, had they given in to their pride. Stevens strives to be a “great butler”, but in reality all he truly wanted was to be free and loved. Hagar wanted to change Bram into a gentleman, and by doing this she felt she would achieve greatness. Both character refused to accept what was always in front of them, and lost their opportunities at true happiness.

Hagar’s attempts to change Bram are in vain due to the fact that he doesn’t want to be changed.
