THE NATURE OF SAMMY’S DECISION(A & P, JOHN UPDIKE)

“Now here comes the sad part of the story, at least my family says it’s sad but I don’t think it’s sad myself.”(14) Young Sammy in the story A & P, written by John Updike, said that to show an optimistic view about the decision of quitting his job as a salesclerk in A & P. Whether it is a “crazy” decision or a reasonable one, it did work someway helpfully for that young man, especially as a resolution for all the conflicts he had to face since taking a job in that supermarket.
It is not Sammy who wanted to work for Lengel’s shop. Sitting in the third checkout slot all day long, watching the shopping-goers going back and forth, checking the cashier, and leaning on the register whenever the store is empty were such a boring work to Sammy. Yet he had to take this job to please his parents for they are the A & P manager’s friends. Born in a poor family, Sammy seemed not to like that unfortunate situation.
