the media conspiracy

In Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut creates a dystopia where every person is not only equal under the law but are forced to be equal with each other in every way. No one person is allowed to be smarter, stronger, a better dancer or singer, or do anything else better than any other person thanks to the 212th and the 213th amendment. Anyone who is gifted in a certain area is given a handycap to offset it. Beautiful people are given ugly masks to wear, smart people are constantly distracted by random sounds played in their ears strong people are given more weight to carry and so on (and all inforced by tha Handycapper General). This is an obvious work of satire, but what point is Vonnegut trying to make?
I don't think...
