The McCarthy Trails And Their Influence On The Crucible The Salem witch trials and McCarthy hearings were some of the darkest chapters in American History. During 1949 and in the early 1950’s Americans struggled with the major threat, communism. Joseph R. McCarthy, a Republican Junior Senator from Wisconsin, was charged of taking office of Senator without quitting as circuit judge. For revenge, he then accused 205 alleged Communists and Communist Sympathizers. One notable person that was accused was Arthur Miller, a playwright who wrote many great books. During the 1950’s people feared Communism. Innocent people were accused of communist actions. Not only were they accused but nothing could have saved them from investigators interrogating you.
