“The Lottery” Essay
“The Lottery,” a short story written by Shirley Jackson and published in 1948, is a story about a disturbing social practice. The setting is in a small town that consists of around three hundred people. On June 27, of every year, the members of the town are expected to participate in a village-wide lottery. Throughout the story, the reader gets an odd feeling regarding the people and their annual practice. The begging of the story sets a mood of peacefulness and tranquility. The image the author portrays is a normal town on an average summer day. Come to find out, the day of the lottery wasn’t so peaceful or average. Shirley Jackson uses many ways to create horror throughout her story.
The author gives the reader a sense of happiness at the begging of the story by using nature at its finest time. The lottery starts, “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming...
