The Limited

Jonathan Swift tries to figure out throughout this novel what it means to be human. We followed Gulliver through four traumatizing voyages, and we are taken through worlds hosted by creatures and situations and systems of their devising that help us form an answer to what it actually means to be human.
The society of the Houyhnhnms (Houys) is not a Utopia. It is simply a society governed by reason. The society that is created by the Houys might be Gulliver’s ideal Utopia however, depending on what view you take. So the Houtys society is ‘a utopia’.
First I will describe why I think Gulliver would find the Houys society to be a utopia. They have created a society in which there is no crime, no poverty, no disagreement, and no unhappiness. Neither is there any joy, passion, or love. Everything is always on an even plane. Husbands and wives have no more feeling for each other than for anyone else.
