The Komagata Maru Incident

On May 23rd, 1914 a dramatic challenged occurred, as the Komagata Maru, a Japanese Steamer, arrived in Vancouver port with 376 East Indians aboard. They had come straight from Japan, not India their homeland, so it broke the continuous-journey regulation that was in effect at the time. A wealthy Sikh merchant and former labor contractor from Hong Kong, Gurdit Singh Sarhali, hired the steamer to transport the Sikhs. When BC authorities heard of this ship coming to Vancouver their reaction was “Hindus would never be allowed to land in Canada”.
