Arriving in Chicago Jewish immigrants scattered the streets. It was evident that the Jewish immigrants were extremely poor. The Jewish immigrant standard of living was well below what is expectable by the U.S. Department of Labor. The standard of living that was expectable by the U.S. Department of Labor was simple. The Jewish immigrant ought to be able to find a job easily. The job site of the Jewish immigrant should be safe. The Jewish immigrant must be paid enough money by the employer to afford food and shelter. The Jewish immigrant should be able to meet the expense of medical care. The Jewish immigrants had not this standard of living.
Throughout the city of Chicago Jewish immigrants worked for little money. “Thousands upon thousands of (Jewish immigrant) workers complained to their employers that they were in need.” (Metsker) Thus, Jewish immigrants working full-time still were unable to feed and shelter themselves. ...
