James Watt was born on January 19, 1736. He was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer. When he became interested in improving the steam engine, he was working as a mathematical-instrument maker. John Roebuck financed Watt’s research, but Roebuck’s interest was acquired by British manufacturer Matthew Boulton and he and Watt started the manufacture of steam engines. Some of Watt’s patented inventions included the double-action engine, the rotary engine and the steam indicator. He retired in 1800 and only did research work.
