The Impact of Ethics on Decision-Making

An ethically defensible decision includes a number of important elements that range from personal experiences to the religious faith of a person. Professionally, the elements range from the legal guidelines of ones profession to traditions passed down from generation to generation. The most important element of an ethically defensible decision is the ground rules that underpin each decision. The ground rules of ethics are normally shaped by the collective ethics of an organization coupled with the individual’s own ethical groundings.
The ethics of an organization are often rooted in the legal guidelines of ones chosen profession such as an Engineer, Doctor, or Attorney. Nearly every profession has an oath that newly inducted members take as a guide to help them make decisions affecting their customers.
