In the House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the main character Esperanza Cordero, is followed as she discovers the true importance of her heritage, and the meaning of life. As Esperanza matures, more and more become apparent to her, the meaning of family, and the ways in which it exists, and the different roles sexuality plays in the world around her. Throughout the book, Esperanza’s ambitions, and those of the people with which she interacts also become clear, not only to the reader, but to Esperanza as well.
