The Great Gatsby

The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is set in the 1920?. At that time, American political ideals had a conflict with the actual social conditions that existed. Whereas American democracy was based on equality among people, social discrimination was prevalent and the divisions among the classes could not be overcome. As a result, people who saw others with money began to want what others had; they did not see how most people with money did not have moral values. Even if they did see this, they would not have cared. This is because they saw only the good values that came with wealth. People? materialistic needs changed their priorities and values. However, actually, the American dream was an idea of working hard to support one? family and to increase one? wealth. Gaining these things gave people a feeling of self-satisfaction.
