Characters are an important part of any film. The film The Great Gatsby is long enough to develop characters, and to have quite a few of them as well.
Understanding characters is imperative in understanding The Great Gatsby. Our reaction to the characters is filtered through the narrative perspective and moulded by the use of setting, dialogue, language, imagery and symbolism. It is through the use of these techniques and through complicated characterisation that Fitzgerald presents us with startlingly three-dimensional; yet, at a superficial level, symbolic characters.
