The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis

Literature is defined by its many different characteristics. In The Great Divorce all of them are met. Lewis writes a story about the seperation of heaven and hell and the all important spiritual choice that we are presented with.
Literature is a reflection of the times unlike real life it has projected intentions. In The Great Divorce Lewis presents us with the Grey town which is dim and dark and full of quarrelsome people. Then he tells us about a bus that is luminous and glowing. It seems to be the opposite of the Grey town. The bus has come from heaven and this sets up his intention to show the separation and difference between heaven and hell.
Literature uses narration and dialogue to reveal polarity or opposites. In the story there is the Big ghost and the Bright spirit who talk about getting into heaven and what must be done.
