The Freedom of the CityExtended Text Response

The words “So I died, as I lived, in defensive flippancy” best described Skinner as a character and his perspectives on life, explored throughout the play.
Striking the scene as a hero he grabs the attention of the audience, with his brave approach. A very down to earth attitude can be noticed in the early stages of the play, where Michael, Lilly and Skinner are just starting to become acquainted. Skinner takes on a more humorous but equally cold-hearted approach as the play progresses. It seems that when our main characters realize that they are within the walls of Guildhall, Skinner becomes interested in taking some advantage of their surroundings and to make the most of this unforeseen event. His lack of respect towards the authorities of his community can be sensed through his behaviour and sarcastic way of describing the value Guildhall should represent to an individual.
