The Frankfurt School and Critical Theory

The material base of the Frankfurt School was the Institut fur Sozialforschung (Institute of Social Research), an autonomous division of the University of Frankfurt. Much of the School’s work had a strong Marxian element running through it, a fact reflected by the Institute’s recurring emphasis upon class, capitalism and the economy. The Institute was established in 1923, and in its earlier years, the work of the School, though varied, had a strongly empirical slant.
