Of all the characters the one in which I believe is the most central of them all would be the mother, Ellen Burstyn. I think this is the most central character because she is the person that suffers a bid ordeal of the time besides the daughter. Also, not only that but she goes on through an emotional breakdown. In this type of case the mother feels hopeless because there is nothing that she could possibly do for her daughter to get out of this circumstance.
