Horrific situations can cause people to do things that they would never do otherwise or become something that they would have never before been. The Holocaust, perhaps the best-known ‘horror story’, although not a story at all, of the 20th century, had this effect on many people. Eliezer, or Elie, the protagonist of Night, is one of the people who were changed by the Holocaust. In the novel, Eliezer’s relationship with God and his view on religion change very dramatically, as does his relationship with his father, and in the end, even Elie’s view of himself changes.
At the beginning of the novel, Eliezer, a Jewish boy, is incredibly devout for his age. He prays sincerely and often, attends services, and even studies the cabbala. When the Jews’ rights are taken away and they are forced to live in ghettos, Elie has faith. As the Jews are shipped in cattle cars and starved, Elie still has faith.
