The Downfall of Victor Frankenstein

“I was hurried away by fury; revenge alone endowed me with strength and composure; it molded my feelings and allowed me to be calculating and calm at periods when otherwise delirium or death would have been my portion.” (p. 185)


Victor Frankenstein changes over the course of the novel Frankenstein from an innocent youth, fascinated by the prospects of science, into a disillusioned, remorseful man determined to destroy the fruits of his arrogant scientific endeavor. Throughout the course of Victors life, his every action and thought causes him to bring about his own downfall. Victor is very interested in science and the “secret of life.” He brings a human like monster to life, but his curiosity backfires on him. Torn by remorse, shame and guilt, Victor refuses to confess to anyone the monster he created, even as he sees the outcome of his creative act spiraling out of control.
