the defensive reasons held by both allies and Germans in ww2

For a number of reasons defensive positions held by both the Germans and the Allies in the First World War from 1914 to 1917 were more effective than their offensive positions. Taking a defensive stance gives the advantage of power: tactics are more simple to organise and carry out, fields of fire could be predetermined, and casualties could be dealt with more efficiently and effectively.

Generally the ideologies of a defensive position have remained the same through time; they are to simply dig in and wait for the attack.
