25a) How does the writer make us feel both amusement and sympathy for Constantia and Josephine in this passage? Refer closely to the passage in support of your answer.

Amusement – when you find some funny, it makes you laugh
Sympathy - when you feel sorry for someone/something.

Constantia and Josephine are both pitiful yet funny at times in this passage, where we witness the relationship between them and their nephew Cyril as he drops by for tea. The writer elicits sympathy for them as they seem to be lonesome and starved for company. Indeed they say ‘Cyril to tea was one of their rare treats’. A visit by a family member is hardly a treat yet the writer makes it seem so for the sisters. Thus this suggests that they have an inactive social life.
