“The Commitments ” has great social and cultural significance, especially for the Irish. Alan Parker has achieved this through many different techniques including: sets, lighting, camera techniques, music, language and representation of families.

Alan Parker uses the streets of Dublin for his sets. He uses real houses and warehouses and this makes the film look very realistic and helps people to relate to it much better than the brightly lit, fake looking sets in a lot of American films.

The realistic sets that Alan Parker has created are greatly enhanced by the lighting. The lighting on the sets of “The Commitments ” is very important to the mood of the film.
