The Crucible- John Proctor’s Inner Conflict

The Crucible portrays the Puritan community of Salem during the infamous, Salem Witch hunts and details the personal conflicts caused by the witch hunts. During this time, a farmer named John Proctor commits a crime of adultery with Abigail Williams, his servant. Elizabeth Proctor, John’s wife, discovered the affair and relieved Abigail from her duties. Shortly thereafter, Elizabeth is accused pf witchcraft and John is filled with much inner conflict. Te resolve the conflict, he is challenged to answer his question of “What is John Proctor?”.
Although John Proctor cheated on his wife Elizabeth, he still loved her and cared for her deeply. John’s love for his wife is shown best when Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft.
