The Crucible is a book set in the late 1600s, during the time of the Salem Witch trials. This book starts out in 1692 in the small home of Reverend Paris. His daughter Betty is found lying in bed and appears to be extremely ill, in a coma-like state. The night before, Betty, Abigail, who is the Reverends niece, Tituba, the Reverends slave, and several of the village girls were found dancing in the woods. Betty began to fall into this unusual state the day after their trip to the woods. Talk of witchcraft began in the small town of Salem after the town’s physician couldn’t determine the cause of her illness.
That morning, Reverend Paris sent for Reverend Hale who is an expert in witchcraft. He proceeded to examine Betty, while Reverend Paris questioned Abigail about the events that had occurred the night before.
