The Company Man

Phil was only 51 years old when he died. The people who knew him said he had worked himself to death. Phil was a very important person in his job. He was one of six vice-presidents, a very hard working man. Phil had no outside extracurricular interests. The only interest he had was his work. Even when Phil wasn’t at work, he was at home thinking and worrying about his work. Work was his entire life to him. He wasn’t a family man. In fact, his family had no idea what he was like. The neighbors knew him better than his own family did. He spent more time at work than with his family. He never seemed to show any love for them. To Phil, it was as if he had no family.
Phil’s wife, Helen, was 48 years old when he died. She used to work in an office before getting married to Phil. She gave up work to be with her family, unlike her husband. But he didn’t seem to care what she did for their family. Perhaps he didn’t realize or didnâ...
