The Color Purple

The Novel, was set in the early 1900’s. During the time, the black people were oppressed by white people. They were abused and taken advantage of. Not only were the black people were oppressed, but also women were oppressed. They had little freedom and were unable to be self sufficient. Women at that time were though as property. They had to despartley struggle because they were belittled by men. They were thought of as ignorant beings that only new how to manage housework. In The Color Purple, Celie is a woman who has been negatively affected by men her whole life. Whether it was her stepfather throughout her childhood or her husband, Mr. _____, during her 20s, men made her life miserable.
Celie's stepfather mistreated her in such a way that an accurate depiction was made. When Celie's mother became ill and unable to satisfy her husband, he told Celie to fulfill her mother's job. When Celie cried because of the pain, her stepfather said,...
