Coming of Age Essay-The Chosen
Reuven Malter goes through a series of character changes that reflect his coming of age throughout the novel. His character goes through transformations due to the discovery of himself through the experiences he has either with self, his father, David Malter, his friend, Danny Saunders, or Danny’s father, Reb Saunders.
Reuven’s character as the novel opens is reflective. He introduces Danny and himself and the fact that they have been neighbors and the fact that over a course of five years, they never spoke-primarily due to the fact that they were involved in highly different denominations of Jewish religions. (3-4) Reuven’s character continues in a confident, loving manner. Although his eye is badly injured and there may be a chance he could not recover well, he is primarily concerned with putting Mr. Galanter out of his way to take him to the hospital(33) and also concerned about worrying his father(45-47).
