The Chosen

The novel begins with the introduction of the main character,

and narrator of the book, Reuven Malter. Reuven is an orthodox,

and a motherless teen living in a large, Jewish community. The

other principal character of the story, is Danny Saunders, a Hasid. He

lives with his father, the religious leader, or rabbi of their Hasidic

Temple. They formally met at the point in time when Danny was at bat

at the softball game between their yeshivas. He accidently hit the ball

toward Reuven, which ended up hitting him in the eye. This left him

hospitalized for a week. During this time, Danny came to the hospital

to apologize, but Reuven denied his entrance, apologies, and sent him

off. Though, when his father found out about the conversation he told

him that he should never refuse to accept someone’s apology. From

then on, when Danny would visit, a wonderful friendship developed

between the two boys.
