In some cases, batterers are life endangering. It is possible to evaluate whether an assailant is likely to kill his partner, family members, or others. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence [NCADV]: Battering is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence. Battering happens with one person believed they are entitled to control another. In all cultures, the perpetrator is most commonly the man of the family, and women are most likely the victims. Author Faith McNulty illustrates with the information provided by Francine Hughes in The Burning Bed about how in March of 1977, Mrs. Hughes was charged with the death by fire of her husband, Mickey Hughes.
