Preamble:
It's a weak defense mechanism ... against the scorn of those close to us. Of course most poets might have you believe that a romantic partner should be closer to you than anyone else.

The truth is that very often a new love in my life will cause my cronies to feel threatened. Out of fear they often decide to cast scorn on the woman I have recently chosen to love. This is what I think instigates braggadocio ... leaping to her defense.

Of course there are some that will play along with the scorn ... still loving the recent addition to their lives, but weaving a tangled web of scornful bullshit playing into the hands of the cronies who really want their recently enthralled friend to be single again.

This is a trap. If the cronies are successful in leading their recently enthralled friend into a pattern of scorn, only one comment has to be repeated to her and she will be irrevocably gone.
