The Blitz - The impression that the British faced the Blitz with courage and unity is a myth.Use the sources and your own knowledge to explain whether you agree with this statement. (14 mks)

Until late August 1940, both Britain and Germany avoided bombing civilian targets. However, on 24th August, the RAF bombed Berlin. Hitler’s response to this was to bomb London and other major cities, including Plymouth, Bristol and Liverpool from 7th September until May 1941. Much of the literature about the Blitz is nostalgic and portrays the Blitz as a time filled with hardship but faced with courage and unity by the British people. For example, Sc. A describes the British as having ‘courage and an unshakeable determination’ although this source is taken from a publisher’s description of a book to celebrate the Blitz so is unlikely to offer an objective view. Some people believe that views such as those in Sc A. are inaccurate and that there was much less community spirit and bravery than is commented on in literature.
