The Black Panther Party

In the 1960’s African-American people were fighting for their civil rights. There were many people who helped to fight. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave speeches and led marches and boycotts. His way to fight was non-violent. Other people chose to fight a different way. One of those groups of people was the Black Panther Party.
The Black Panther Party was founded in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. Founded in California, the original name was The Black Panther Party for Self Defense. This was a group who wanted to help African-Americans protect themselves against police brutality. The Black Panthers wanted African-Americans to protect themselves even if it meant that they had to carry guns to do so.
