The Birthmark

The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story that involves a man named Aylmer’s
thought on perfection and his struggle to remove imperfection. He sees the birthmark that
his wife Georgiana has as an imperfection he thinks his scientific skills will be able to heal
and to him the birthmark represents death.
I feel Aylmer, before he was married, that he had to live without science because
he was sick of it and wanted a wife and a new love. So he goes out and finds someone
who he feels is “perfect,” but once they were married he brings the attention of a tiny
birthmark on Georgiana’s cheek. I don’t understand why he didn’t say anything to her
before he was married if it bothered him so much. By bringing up the idea of removing
