The Big Lie


The summer I turned five was a grueling summer. I had numerous sore throats, and remained indoors for the greater part of the summer. Each sore throat required a trip to Dr. Kaplan’s office. He had been my doctor for as long as I could remember. I actually enjoyed each visit, because each would end in a special prize from his drawer of goodies and of course a lollipop. By the end of the summer I came to the conclusion that I, like Dr. Kaplan wanted to be a doctor. For what could be better than working in an office and being able to play with all the shiny gadgets and having an apparently endless supply of lollipops.
I was so excited that when during one of my visits to see Dr. Kaplan that he asked me, “Desiree, how I would like to go and have a tour of the hospital in where I work?”
During the week or so between that visit and the day of my tour I was the happiest child in my neighborhood. I bragged and gloated to all the neighborhood ch...
