The American Dream The play The American dream consists of five characters; Grandma, Mommy, Daddy, The Young Man and Mrs. Barker. These characters are a representation of abstract ideas or principles. This play is a simple story which consists of an allegory or moral lesson. The moral of this story is to reveal the substitution of artificial for real values in our society through the exchange of abstract concepts by the characters. This play is about a family in which the realities of life are expressed through values that are a fabricated substitute of current values. A controlling and sadistic disciplinarian, the character of the mother plays a role that is reprimanding and violent. It begins with the Mommy and Daddy in which the Mother seems to always be distracted or upset because of the actions of others that do not appeal to her. Daddy is kept under a tight reign and therefore loses his sense of masculinity. He is viewed as a negative individual and presence. Therefore, Daddy is...
