The Age of Clutter
Fornaciari and Loffredo Roca (1999) have identified some interesting points regarding the use of Internet information gathering. In short, there is a ton on information on the web and there is no system in place to let a researcher know if the information is current, valid, or if it pertains to the researchers query. The authors think they have devised a way to minimize the search for relevant data. They explain the solution after first describing the problems with Internet information gathering.
They have identified the problems to be the Internet search engines filter tools, information overload, and questionable data relevance and web site quality. While I agree with the authors that it is best to have an understanding of how the search engine’s filtering tool works, it seems unreasonable to me do so. I ...
