The 21st Century - Has money and wealth taken over?

As we enter the 21st century many new issues and problems have to be dealt with, one concerning issue is that of Money and Wealth and how these material things are causing greed and shaping how we act as human beings. This issue can be seen through many texts, namely the book, 'The Great Gatsby', and the film, 'Citizen Kane', and it was only after reading and viewing these texts that my eyes were opened to the issue. The issue is also evident in many current affairs today and highlights how money and wealth have today become more important than individual qualities such as kindness and generosity. It is important, especially in today's society, that we take hold of such an issue to prevent ourselves from becoming too materialistic and remembering what really is important, rather than living only to have money and become wealthy.
