Th Unlucky Boy

In the “Rocking-Horse Winner,” D.H. Lawrence tells the story of a woman who is obsessed with money. The woman is young and beautiful. She is married and she has two children. The woman and her family live beyond their means; they have servants and an expensive house, but they never have enough money. She feels she has no luck because she doesn’t have money. She is not capable of loving anyone, not even her own children. All she cares about is having wealth. Her children can perceive this, especially her son Paul. He wants to win her love so he resorts to riding his rocking horse, which he says helps him see the outcome of horse races. The boy places bets with the help of the gardener and his uncle, and he usually wins. Paul wants to have enough money, so his mother will love him when she gets it. The boy feels that he needs to be lucky. He rides his rocking horse so fast and hard that he collapses and dies. The theme of the story is that the wealth doesn’t bring happiness. Thr...
