Television: How Television shaped American culture

The word “television” comes from the Greek word that means “far away” and the Latin word that means “see”. Television is not only seeing far away; it is hearing far away also. Think of it as a radio with pictures added. Television broadcasting did not begin until 1941 when the FCC authorized commercial broadcasting in the U.S. Television is the instant transmission of images, such as scenes or pictures, either fixed or moving, by electronic means over electrical transmission lines or by radio broadcasting stations. The cultural history of television began in 1923. In 1923, Vladimir Zworykin develops a television camera tube for RCA. In 1927, Philo Farnsworth applies for electronic television patents.
